Every year, U.S. News and World Report rates 150 metropolitan areas on their livability. Last year, Portland was No. 19 – this year it is at No. 8, between Florida’s Sarasota (No. 9) and Naples (No. 7).
The analysis compared cities on the basis of 11 criteria in five categories: the job market, housing affordability, quality of life, net migration and a “desirability index” based on a poll in May of 3,600 people across the U.S. about where they’d like to live.
